Galaxy Alpha gets reviewed, key features highlighted

According to reports, Galaxy Alpha is supposed to be Samsung's match to the upcoming iPhone 6. With a smaller screen to measure at 4.7', it should fit into the same category as the iPhone, and will try to move Apple users to the Samsung side. 

Following a tide of leaks about the device, Samsung has officially taken the wraps of the device, and we now have our first hands-on of the device. by a Russian blog wh got their hands on it before anyone else. Check out their video:

While the video itself doesn't tell us much, the written version does give us a whole lot more details, and we brought you a summary of what they wrote in their website:

First of all, contrary to previous rumors of a 6 mm metal body, the device is going to feature a metal body, and will have an improved version of the dimpled back of the Galaxy S5, with a metal frame surrounding the device. The dimensions will still be thin: The device will be a mere 6.7 mm thin, with the full dimensions being 132.4x65.5x6.7mm., and that should help it fit the hand comfortably.

However, the thickness comes at a cost in the shape of a small-ish 1,860 mAh battery. In comparison , the Galaxy SIII with similar dimensions but thicker had 2,100 mAh. But, since Samsung is trying to compete with Apple here, perhaps sacrificing battery for thinness is a smart move, as the iPhone 5s only has 1,560 mAh. 

When compared side by side to with the iPhone 5s, it shows the size difference is very subtle compared to the 0.7' screen difference. This can also be seen with the dimensions, and the device should be compact also for those with smaller hands.

The full specs of the device inclue a 1280x720 4.7' SAMOLED display, 1.8 GHz 8-core Exynos 5430 (there might be another version with SD 805), Mali-T628 graphics accelerator, 2 GB RAM, 32 GB of un-expandable memory (which translates to real-life 25 GB), and LTE-A (Cat. 6) support., and for a Samsung first it will feature a nano-sim card.

As far as performance goes, the device got 37,734 on Antutu, which would position it best among the major OEMs. In the battery, we got somewhat of a weird situation- While the screenshots show an amazing 11 hours of screen-on time, Antutu tester claims this battery is one of the worst, getting a very low score of under 3,000, so it looks like the small battery does suffer when it comes to usage. However, this might not be a final product, and we could see some changes by the time it goes on sale. Also, the small battery should allow for very quick charging.

The device features a 12 MP back-camera, with 4K video support, and a 2.1 MP front. Next to the camera is a heart-rate monitor, with the fingerprint scanner on the home button. The phone will run Android 4.4.4 KitKat. It will also be water- and dust-proof. 

The launch date will probably be around September 12, so you'll have tow wait until then to get your hands on the device.

Galaxy Alpha full specs, price and release date leaked

It would seem Samsung will have nothing left to tell us when the official release date does arrive. We already had the full specs of the phone thanks to an Antutu benchmark, and now thanks to a Brazilian blog, not only are these specs confirmed but we also got a release date and a price tag.

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha was initially thought to be the long-rumored 'Prime' version of the Galaxy S5, but eventually it turned out to be a Samsung-made iPhone 6 contender, boasting a small screen in order to fight Apple's customers.

Full specs include a 4.7' 1280x720 SAMOLED display, two versions which would include either an octa-core Exynos or a Snapdragon 805, 2 GB RAM, 12/2.1 MP cameras, and an 1,860 mAh battery. The device will come with 32/64 GB storage options, which will not be expandable.

While the screen is somewhat disappointing, we would have gotten over that if the rest of the specs would match up. However, the phone doesn't do a thing to wow us, and with the 4.7' screen it is almost identical to the GS3's specs, with an upgraded processor. We could have expected more.

According to the source, announcement will occur between end-August to mid-September, and the device will be released between end-September to mid-October.

Galaxy Alpha specs full leaked

The Galaxy Alpha, the phone Samsung is planning to put up against the upcoming large-*normal*-sized-screen iPhone 6, is giving up its information more and more as we near the launch date, and now thanks to a UK retailer which put the pre-order page up too soon, we now got pretty much everything about it.

While the page has seen been taken down, the cached version is still available and can be accessed through the link below. According to the pre-order page, the phone will feature a fingerprint scanner, heart-rate monitor, super-fast focus (0.3 seconds), and LTE support.

Internally, the Galaxy Alpha will sport a 4.7' AMOLED 720p display, accounting for 320 ppi, it will run the octa-core Exynos 5433 with 2 GB RAM, 32 GB storage, LTE Support, 12 MP/ 2.1 MP back/front, and all that with Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

Galaxy Alpha leaks in high quality

The Galaxy Alpha is already past the 'rumored' stage and this handset is now pretty much confirmed to exist, and the only question is to get the full features and an official launch date. 

Previous pictures were certainly not the works of a Mr. Blurrycam, but this new set leaves no doubt as to how this phone looks design-wise. This is actually one of the rare times when beyond specifications and screen-off photos, the device is leaked in a high-quality not-blurry photo featuring the home- and lock-screen in full details.

This looks to follow the design of the Galaxy S5, which makes sense since this is supposed to be a smaller version of the S5 which is destined at competition with the upcoming iPhone 6. The phone's rumored launch date should be close to the iPhone's, so they might have direct competition over the consumer's heart (not that we think this will make any difference, but whatever. Let Sammy dream).


So far, details of the device include a somewhat-disappointing 720p 4.7' display, paired with Exynos 5433, 2 GB RAM, 12/2 MP back/front cameras, 32 GB storage and all that runnig KitKat 4.4.4.

Galaxy Alpha might only feature 4.8' 720p screen

After recent image leaks of the device, rumored to be a premium-phone intended for direct competition with the iPhone 6 with its 4.8 inch screen, now it seems it might be slightly less premium.

While the 720p 4.8' screen is a dejá vú from the S3, the internals are rumored to be much higher-end, including a Snapdragon 801 processor and 2/3 GB of RAM. However, just like we were surprised by screen quality, the night be mid range as well, so stay tuned for more.

Ironically, the screen size and quality will make it even more on par with the iPhone, which is rumored to have the same screen and quality. It will also sport a premium ketal body, which basically confirms at which phone the Alpha is directed at taking a jab at.

Storage-wise, it will have a non-expandable 32 GB memory, with a none removable back (uncharacteristic), and overall will offer a very unibody-ish quality.
