Sony Xperia Z3 gets benchmarked, no improvement over Z2

Yet another device fell prone to the GFX Bench trap, and all its specs have been captured and released to the public. The device's model number is the Sony D6603, a.k.a Sony Xperia Z3. Disappointing news: The specs are identical to the Z2.

After Sony has made it clear it is sticking with a 6-month release cycle on its Xperia Z line, it is obvious we will not get significant improvements with each new iteration. However, we would expect some change when it comes to the specs.

According to GFX Bench, the device will feature a 1080p 5.1' display, SD 800, 20 MP camera, 3 GB RAM, and all the rest of the Z2's specs. That would make it basically identical. Now, that doesn't mean we are getting the same device. Here's a snapshot from the GFX Bench website:

First of all, it would be hard to believe we will be seeing an SD 800 in the Z3, and this will probably get bumped up to SD 801 when we reach the official launch. Moreover, 19 MP doesn't mean the camera hasn't been improved, and it will probabl feature Sony's curved sensor. The curved sensor is the first of its kind, and is targeted at mimicking the curved shape of the human eye (our eyes aren't flat), and thus producing better photos. We can also expect the Z3 to feature an improved UI.



Noteworthy is saying this is coinciding with other rumors which claim the display to be slightly larger at 5.15', and the device to have an SD 801 like we mentioned above. 

The announcement event of the Xperia Z3 is expected to happen at IFA Berlin on September 3, 2014, so we don't have too long until the official unveiling. What do you think, would you get a slightly-improved Z2 in the shape

Motorola Nexus 6 'Shamu' gets benchmarked

It looks like the rumors about the Nexus line dying are dead themselves. Following the rumors about Motorola producing a Nexus device which is code-named 'Shamu', we now have concrete information about the device's existence. 

 Once again, the information is leaked via a popular bench-marking website, this time GFXBench. While it seems the person who ran the benchmark was careful not to reveal too much information about the device, and we don't have the full specs, we do have some basic info.

 From the bench-marking score, we can derive the following: Since it got on par with the S5 and Z2, we can assume it has a 1080p display, since QHD would be closer to the G3. While that might be disappointing to some, especially considering the device's rumored giant size, it's not too bad and shouldn't be a deal-breaker. That also means we can expect better battery life than if it had a QHD display.

 While we can't tell  for sure, the range in which the score was hints at the processor being a Snapdragon 801, since this are the general scores it tends to generate when coupled with a 1080p display.

Galaxy Alpha full specs, price and release date leaked

It would seem Samsung will have nothing left to tell us when the official release date does arrive. We already had the full specs of the phone thanks to an Antutu benchmark, and now thanks to a Brazilian blog, not only are these specs confirmed but we also got a release date and a price tag.

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha was initially thought to be the long-rumored 'Prime' version of the Galaxy S5, but eventually it turned out to be a Samsung-made iPhone 6 contender, boasting a small screen in order to fight Apple's customers.

Full specs include a 4.7' 1280x720 SAMOLED display, two versions which would include either an octa-core Exynos or a Snapdragon 805, 2 GB RAM, 12/2.1 MP cameras, and an 1,860 mAh battery. The device will come with 32/64 GB storage options, which will not be expandable.

While the screen is somewhat disappointing, we would have gotten over that if the rest of the specs would match up. However, the phone doesn't do a thing to wow us, and with the 4.7' screen it is almost identical to the GS3's specs, with an upgraded processor. We could have expected more.


According to the source, announcement will occur between end-August to mid-September, and the device will be released between end-September to mid-October.

Upgrade Kindle Fire HDX with Snapdragon 805 spotted on Antutu

With the Kindle Fire HDX nearing a full year on the market, the release of an updated device is nearing, and according to a recent benchmark spotted on Antutu, it seems this will be quite a good one.

 The new device which was spotted benchmarking on Antutu has the same name as its predecessor, although the hardware is far from same. While the previous HDX 8.9 had Snapdragon 800 paired with a FHD display, this one is definitely a notch above. 

 The full specs are an 8.9' QHD display, with a strong 2.45 GHz Snapdragon 805 paired with Adreno 420 and 2 GB of RAM (shame, 3 would've made it truly un-compromising). The back-shooter is 8 MP while the front is 1 MP, which is reasonable for a tablet. It also has Android 4.4.4 KitKat, which is obvious but good nonetheless. See it for yourselves:


While Amazon's devices are usually not making a grab for the high-end market, this one definitely has some things to show for, and with all the Amazon features likely to be included you should definitely keep an eye on this one. Stay tuned for more details.

Snapdragon 805 not a major performance upgrade on LG G3, according to benchmarks

Preceding the release of the Galaxy S5, LG G3 and other flagships, rumors of a Snapdragon 805 contained within them were making rounds and causing the tech community to drool. According to these benchmarks, that might have been slightly unjustified. 

 While the handset's 2.7 GHz sure sounds promising, especially paired with the Adreno 420 which Qualcomm claims is 40% faster than the Adreno 330, when it comes to actual peak performance, it doesn't seem to have much of an edge over the SD 801.

 Actually, if you compare the clock speed rates and the benchmark rates, you get similiar results. At the benchmarks, while the LG G3 Cat.6 got 33,991 on Antutu, the original G3 got 30,634. That's an 11% increase. With the clock speed being 2.7 GHz, that's an improvement of 8% over the previous 2.5 GHz SD 801. While clock speed isn't everything, it would have been unjust to expect much more by simply changing a device's processor. 

 Nonetheless, since SD 810 is yet to be available, SD 805 is the only sensible choice for the LTE-A handset, simply because it is the only on that supports Cat.6 LTE (yup, that's where the G3 Cat.6 got its name from).

 So, what did we learn? First of all, just because it has a new name, doesn't mean performance will boom. So don't only look at the branding. Secondly, that if you don't live in an LTE-A area, you shouldn't mind a lack of SD 805 too much. Although it would be nice.

Antutu Anonymous device achieves over 43,000 on Antutu

A mysterious, un-announced as-of-yet device with a score of 43,149 on popular benchmarking app Antutu has surfaced. While Antutu might not be the most accurate way of measuring, especially after the benchmark-boosting scandal, most devices still hardly break the 40K barrier, so a score of over 43,000 is very impressive.
